Prevention is Better Than Cure: Protecting Ourselves and Our Children from Modern Fitan

“O you who believe! Ward off yourselves and your families against a Fire (Hell) whose fuel is men and stones…” (Surah At-Tahrim 66:6 Hilai & Khan translation).

We are living in a time where information reaches us faster than ever before. With a few taps on a screen, our children and we ourselves can be exposed to ideas that directly oppose the Qur’an and the authentic Sunnah. Every generation has its trials, but the speed and accessibility of today’s fitan make them especially dangerous.

Recently, we have seen the rise of individuals with large online followings who openly reject the authority of hadith, reinterpret Islam according to modern desires, or call people away from the sunnah. While these ideas are often presented with confidence and polished production, eloquence and popularity are never proofs in Islam. The truth is known by its evidence, not by the number of followers someone has.

Allāh, the Most High, says:

“And if you obey most of those on the earth, they will mislead you far away from Allāh’s Path. They follow nothing but conjectures, and they do nothing but lie.”(Surah Al-An’am 6:116 Hilai & Khan translation).

Why We Must Stay Aware

Some may feel that ignoring these issues is the safest approach. While we certainly should not immerse ourselves in doubtful content, there is a difference between consuming fitnah and being aware of it.

A parent who is unaware of the latest ideological trends cannot prepare their children to recognise them. A teacher who does not know the doubts being spread cannot equip students with the correct Islamic responses.

Prevention Is Better Than Cure

Just as we teach road safety before allowing a child to cross the street alone, we should prepare ourselves and our children before doubts arrive at our doorstep.

This prevention includes:

* Strengthening our belief in the Qur’an and the authentic Sunnah.

* Teaching our children the importance of following the understanding of the Salaf.

* Studying the foundations of the religion before controversial topics arise.

* Building trust so our children feel comfortable asking difficult questions.

* Regularly checking the content and personalities our families are following online (this is another conversation for another post)

When the foundation is strong, they are far less likely to be shaken by every new trend.

Not Every Voice Deserves Our Attention

The internet has made it possible for anyone with a camera and confidence to present themselves as a teacher of Islam. Followers, views, and viral clips are not signs of knowledge or righteousness.

Our religion is preserved through chains of knowledge, qualified scholarship, and adherence to the Qur’an and authentic Sunnah upon the understanding of the Salaf, not through charismatic personalities or social media algorithms.

Teaching Critical Thinking Through an Islamic Lens

As homeschooling parents, we have a unique opportunity to teach our children not only what to believe, but how to evaluate claims.

Encourage them to ask:

• What is the evidence from the Qur’an and authentic Sunnah?

• How did the Companions understand this matter?

• Have the recognised scholars spoken about this issue?

• Is this person known for seeking knowledge from the scholars, or are they simply expressing opinions?

Teaching these habits early can help our children navigate an increasingly confusing digital world.

Balancing Awareness with Beneficial Knowledge

While awareness is important, constantly following debates, controversies, and every new online dispute can harden the heart and distract from beneficial knowledge.

The believer’s focus should remain upon learning, worship, good character, and seeking closeness to Allāh. We should only expose ourselves to discussions of doubtful matters when there is a genuine need and when we have the knowledge or access to trustworthy scholars to distinguish truth from falsehood.

A Final Reminder

Every generation faces its own fitan. Our children are growing up in a world where doubts are marketed attractively and falsehood is often packaged as “thinking for yourself.”

This makes our responsibility even greater.

Let us strive to build homes filled with Qur’an, authentic Sunnah, sound knowledge, love for the Prophet ﷺ and the righteous predecessors. Let us stay informed enough to protect our families without becoming consumed by every controversy.
