Learning Whilst Teaching

ree

Whether you are home educating, teaching or just teaching your own schooled children, it is important to regularly seek knowledge.

For many born Muslims Islam hasn’t always been taught correctly. This in itself is a huge topic but this has led to us passing down incorrect information about Islam. We have to relearn a lot of things because overtime we can make errors or forget. However there may be aspects of Islam we were taught as children and assumed it was correct. It is vital we revisit everything and check whether it is upon evidence, upon Qur’an and Sunnah.

When teaching my classes I have to double check my sources, listen to lectures, read books and articles by scholars and students of knowledge. After doing that it maybe I’ve only come up with a few lines worth of work to teach. That is how diligent we have to be when it comes to teaching and seeking knowledge.

One of the beautiful things about home education is that you get to learn with your child. This obviously doesn’t have to be Islamic Studies it can be Science, Geography etc and it can be really fun. For me I think it’s because I can teach it in a way my child enjoys, I can focus on topics that are engaging for her age. You have the flexibility of doing things above or below your child’s age and focus more on their ability.

Finally, just to drive the point home. When it comes to Islam, Tawheed, Eemaan, Tafseer, we should always do our research. We are responsible for teaching the correct information and it’s not be taken lightly. A reminder to myself first.

Anas ibn Malik reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

طَلَبُ الْعِلْمِ فَرِيضَةٌ عَلَى كُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ

Seeking knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim.
